The Trustkill Fanclub

Trustkill Records has joined the new crop of labels offering a Fan Club model to fans of their music.

According to their easy-to-paste press release:

“Trustkill will offer 3 tiers to the subscription plan called 1. “The Pit”, 2. “Front Row”, and 3. “Backstage” which will give fans access to a massive library of audio, videos, as well as band/Trustkill merchandise. For the various price point subscription levels fans will have the opportunity of advance shipments of new Trustkill CDs/DVDs, and access to exclusive never-before-heard and seen songs/videos, a Trustkill watch, a Trustkill skate deck, exclusive Trustkill and free artist shirts and hoodies, a phone call from your favorite Trustkill artist, hand numbered Trustkill poster, all access “laminate” show pass, two (2) tickets to any Trustkill artist show, and access to your favorite Trustkill band’s video shoot, and lots more!”

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, I think a label based fan club (especially for a prolific, very genre specific label) where people pay upfront for special access is a good idea in a p2p driven music marketplace. This also takes it out of the realm of having to sign up for one band and really aggregates an entire fan base and for once, gives a pretty good value.

GSL closes its doors, ceases to release new music

Sadly, I just got news of GSL’s decision to cease releasing new records. They offered the following statement (click the link to read it). It is a total bummer as I have always held Sonny Kay, co-owner of GSL, in high regard and with total respect and admiration. He actually gave me an early start in my “music career” when he handed me the reigns of booking Club 156 in Boulder, CO, back in 1995. I wish Sonny nothing but good things in all of his future endeavors.

Response to Wired’s “Vinyl Maybe Be Final Nail in CD’s Coffin”

Wired recently published a piece called, “Vinyl May Be Final Nail in CD’s Coffin”. It is an interesting look at Vinyl’s recent rise in popularity which has become a hot topic amongst various publications. Since this piece ran on Monday, I have had at least a dozen links to the story forwarded to me. I would like to offer my own thoughts on the post.

Issue Oriented Podcast #25 w/ Norman Brannon and Jordan Cooper

Issue Oriented just posted their 25th episode. Congratulations Ronen. You can stop by the Issue Oriented Website to download or stream the episode. This episode has NORMAN BRANNON (TEXAS IS THE REASON & author/editor of The Anti-Matter Anthology) and REVELATION RECORDS founder/maestro JORDAN COOPER. I can’t say it enough about Ronen Kaufman as he is one of the most articulate folks in independent music. He always has interesting people and concepts in every episode. When I just went to New York, I actually visited Ronen who was kind enough to interview me for what might be episode #26. It was a great time and an honor to sit and talk with him.

Check out the press release at the following link.

The CMJ Panel, a Suburban Home experiment, and an interesting blog post

I have been meaning to write a little something about the panel I moderated at CMJ and over the time that has passed, I decided to try something new with Suburban Home, and just this morning, I was sent a link of a blog post explaining their thoughts on Oink’s recent shut down and their thoughts about music piracy. All of these things have inspired me to write a post about the changing face of music sales.
