Virgil Dickerson has been running Suburban Home Records, a small, independent record label based in Denver, Colorado for the past 12 years. It started as a fanzine in September of 1995 and has become a label, a distributor, a vinyl imprint and store, a custom t-shirt company and this blog about the music industry. He remains optimistic about the future of music sales although it is tougher now than it has ever been trying to sell a product people actively get for free. Suburban Home's bands include Drag the River, Tim Barry, Love Me Destroyer, On Guard, Ghost Buffalo, Josh Small, Stereotyperider, Two Cow Garage and Adventures of Jet.
Sean Klassen has found his lot in life through playing guitar in struggling indie bands for over ten years now, currently playing in tongue-in-cheek heavy metal band Dartanian. Through playing music he discovered the art of graphic design and now spends much of his time designing various records, cds, posters and websites for a wide variety of clients ranging from local bands to international brands such as Universal Pictures and Audi. Sean currently pays his bills working as an Art Director at Factory Design Labs in Denver. He also enjoys wearing argyle socks and playing hockey. Feel free to direct any technical or website related comments or problems his way.
Bill Wilson founded the NY based indie, Blackout! Records while a college student at Fordham University in 1989. In it's 18 year history, the label (and sub-imprints) has released music from a diverse roster of bands, including Crime In Stereo, Deadguy, Ensign, Guided By Voices, H2O, Killing Time, Kill Your Idols, and Sheer Terror. He also has held positions as a Product Manager at RED; Distribution Marketing Manager at Caroline Distribution; and General Manager of Earache Records. Since 2001 he has worked in digital media and social networking, and is currently employed by a big ol' multinational media company in their mobile entertainment division.
These Arms are Snakes have a brand new album, Easter, out today. We have actually been carrying the vinyl version of the album from Second Nature for close to 2 weeks, but the CD and digital versions are out today. Jade Tree has been so kind as to host a stream of the entire album as well as an mp3 from the album. These Arms are Snakes are just one of those bands that you listen to and see live and you just wonder, why isn’t this band bigger than they are. I hope that Easter will be the album to get this band some attention, but regardless, the band will always have my ears.
I would love to see this record do well on the indie charts so anyone on the fence, please consider buying this album, it could be their best one yet.
After I last posted about AOL’s interface, I subscribed to their feed through Itunes. Although I haven’t been keeping up with each downloaded podcast, I just noticed that they have posted a number of interesting sessions. Recent podcasts include Walter Schreifels (of Gorilla Biscuits, Walking Concerts, Rival Schools, and Quicksand), Britt Daniels (of Spoon), Jeremy Enigk (of Sunny Day Real Estate), and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The Interface is easily the coolest thing AOL participates in.
Sean, my partner in crime at IndieHQ, will be super stoked on the Walter Schreifels’ session. He is the biggest Walter fan that I know.
Very cool posts with mp3s of songs that have been covered by everyone. Songs from Radiohead’s Creep being covered by U2, Muse and more; Oasis’ Wonderwall being covered by Ryan Adams, Cartel, Cat Power, Pavement, and more. There are a ton of covers and a lot of time taken to make these posts. You may get tired of hearing wonderwall 20 times, but still cool nonetheless.
I don’t normally like to note major label streams, but I have a soft spot for the Killers and the Decemberists. MTV’s the Leak has a full album stream of the Killers’ new album, “Sam’s Town”. Funny thing is that Sam’s Town is the host of BYO’s Punk Rock bowling tournament.
It took some convincing, but I talked Ross from Reignition Records into allowing me to post an mp3 from the brilliant Static Age Album, Blank Screens, which coincidentally is in stores today. Please consider checking out the mp3 as well as full album streams on Pastepunk and Punknews.
Excuse my ignorance of the Vermont music scene but the Static Age is the first band I know of from the area. I was really surprised when I first heard this new record. I received a link to a stream from Reignition as we are distributing the album and I was completely blown away. I had thought they were a completely different sounding band. I guess I thought they might be street punk or along the lines of a band who would share the same name as a Misfits’ album. I was way off base as the band has more to do with bands like the Cure, New Order, Depeche Mode. And for some reason, I think of the Jealous Sound every time I listen to Blank Screens. Not sure if anyone else picks up on that, but I am a huge Jealous Sound fan. I like this record a lot and really hope for good things for both the band and the label, not just because that would mean good things for me and Suburban Home. Take a listen and let me know what you think.
Sean just installed a new widget that allows us to finally be able to post Youtube videos on the site. For those of you too lazy to follow the link I provided yesterday of the Fear Before the March of Flames commercial, I figured you might be willing to click the you tube video. Enjoy.
I don’t know how this site exists, but it does so I highly recommend you stop what you are doing and download everything you can. I am currently listening to some b-sides from Elliott Smith’s latest album, From a Basement on the Hill and the songs sound incredible. There are b-sides and demos from pretty much every album he ever released. And the songs are available in DRM-free mp3s. I think it is only a matter of time before the site is taken down, but while it is up, go there.
It has been too long since I have done this and there are tons of new music for you to check out, most in the way of streams:
Static Age “Blank Screens” full album stream [Pastepunk]
I am a bit biased as we are helping distribute this album, but even if we weren’t, I would be super stoked about this record. Having already received comparisons to the Cure and Depeche Mode, I actually hear a lot of the Jealous Sound in the band’s vocal delivery which is a huge compliment. I love the Jealous Sound. Great record that I highly recommend checking out.
Three Songs from the Upcoming Fear Before Album [Pure Volume]
Fear Before have a new album coming out next week. You can check out 3 songs from “the always open mouth” before it comes out. This is some of the best stuff Fear B4 have ever done and I hope they blow up on this record. EVR have big plans for their first week scans and I hope it happens.
In what seems to be more and more common for bands these days, Juliana Hatfield has posted a bunch of mp3s on her site to freely download. There is also a link to give a donation if you deem the songs to be worthy. I’m listening to them right now and while they’re mostly demos, there’s some pretty good tunes to check out. If you haven’t heard any of her stuff before especially check it out. Her voice is beautiful. I’ve been a big fan since I first discovered her way back when I was in 8th grade.
I am getting very excited for the upcoming Lemonheads album. Vagrant just posted an ecard where you can stream 4 songs from the new album due out 9/26/06. “Come on Feel the Lemonheads” is high up on my list of favorite albums and I have always hoped Evan Dando would get the band back together. Evan has enlisted the help of Bill Stephensen and Karl Alvarez of Descendents/All as his rhythm section and even has guest appearances with J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. The 4 songs are great and I can only count down the days til September 26th.
