Last night, I went to go see Drag the River play with Rocky Votolato. Drag will not only be touring with Rocky, but starting next week, Drag will also be performing as Rocky’s backing band. It should be an incredible tour where Drag will be exposed to a lot of new fans. The show was incredible. Both Drag and Rocky performed magical sets and Drag played one of my new favorite songs, “Tobacco Fields”. If you see this tour, yell out this song name and you will be stoked.
Some of you may be aware that Rocky has a brother, Cody Votolato who plays guitar in the Blood Brothers. Both Rocky and Cody were in the band Waxwing before going their respective directions. Did you know that Rocky has another brother, Sonny, who plays guitar and sings in the band Slender Means? I saw them play last night and they were really, really good. They play pretty jangly, poppy indie rock in similar vein to bands like Belle and Sebastian and Voxtrot with maybe a little Smiths thrown in there. There are also a few songs that remind me of Albert Hammond Jr’s solo stuff. Here is an MP3 for “Telepathic Lovesick Heart” from their album, Neon and Ruin. I have been listening to some tunes on their website and on their myspace page and highly recommend that you do, too. The band will be performing a few shows at SXSW so make sure to note their performances.

I have received a couple of comments saying that Gatsbys is in fact not breaking up. I am glad to hear that as they are one of my favorite bands. I figured while mentioning this correction, I would also note that Red Red Blue has posted 2 more songs. I am digging them all, but still love “Our Love” the best.

Two of my newer favorite bands, Limbeck and Portugal the Man, have recently posted new songs from upcoming releases.
Limbeck has a brand new album coming out on April 10th, their 3rd for Doghouse Records. I have been lucky enough to have received a copy from the band when they were in Colorado for a few shows. I have been a longtime fan, but I think that this newest album could be their best. It is a little less country with a Shins/Ben Kweller vibe. “Big Drag” is a good example of what you can expect on the new album and with luck, this album will get the band the attention they deserve. We are also luckily putting out their new album on vinyl and should have copies in stock before the CD’s street date. Damn I love this band.
Portugal the Man have a new EP coming out on Reincarnate Music. Does anyone know anything about this label? I was surprised to see a label other than Fearless putting this out. The track, “Ruby Magic” picks up where their album “Waiter, You Vultures” left off. It seems like Portugal are working super hard and always seem to be touring. I really like their album and this new track seems just as great. It is hard to compare Portugal to other bands, but I think of a less frantic Mars Volta and maybe a dash of Portishead/Tricky.
I highly recommend checking out both tracks as both bands are doing some amazing stuff.

I am falling in love with the lone song on Red Red Blue’s myspace page. This is a new project from Nic, formerly of Gatsby’s American Dream. The song is very rough, but it is so insanely catchy. I have always loved Gatsby’s and Nic’s voice and “Our Love” has me eagerly waiting for more.

AOL is again hosting a full album streams and this week, they have the debut from Ex-Blink 182 members Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker, + 44. It just dawned on me that having a band name +44 could be a nightmare for search engines and for trying to find in a record store. I would guess that they would put it towards the front of the rock, but I had until today thought it was spelled out Plus 44. Either way, check it out. I am curious to know what you all think. I actually like it and was pretty certain that I wouldn’t. If I had to vote + 44 or Angels and Airwaves, I would have to go + 44. To access the full album streams, click here.

My friend, Keith, over at ASCAP just sent me an email letting me know about a podcast they just posted:

I am about to download it as I am a huge Brodsky fan. I absolutely love his solo album, “Ole Sunday”. Stephen is just one of those cats that make you jealous as to just how talented he is. Thanks Keith.
