Thoughts on the indie charts - I was surprised to see Thursday sell more copies than Taking Back Sunday with their recent discography CDs. From what I gather, Thursday put a lot of time and effort into their release and the accompanying DVD is something worth checking out. I have a promo copy and really need to check it out. I read that the Taking Back Sunday release is pretty worthless with the inclusion of only 2 songs most people have not heard. Saves the Day had a good showing, but I expected them to have a stronger first week. The Color Fred sold quite a few more than I thought they would. Is this album good? I kind of liked Breaking Pangaea which I think was his older band. I am bummed to see that Minus the Bear’s “Planet of Ice” is slowly getting off the charts. I spoke to David at Suicide Squeeze and he said that their being on MTV for that week did very little to help sales and cited the recent upsurge in sales of Tegan and Sara through their MTV spots recently where they sold 50 percent more the week after.

Notable Major label releases -  The Eagles sold 700,000 copies to take the top spot and their record was sold primarily at Walmart and nowhere else. I guess the white trash like their Eagles. Britney sold almost 300,000 copies to take #2. Avenged Sevenfold sold 93,000 to take the 4th spot. Backstreet Boys sold 80,000 copies to take the 7 spot. Armor for Sleep sold 9,000 copies.

Upcoming releases / Predictions - This week we have new releases by Operation Ivy (I thought it was last week, my bad), Jim Ward, Demon Hunter, Angels and Airwaves, Agnostic Front, Bright Eyes, Neko Case reissues, Sara Dougher, Evaporators, God Forbid, Little Big Town, Mad Sin, Nicotine, Plain White T’s, the 69 Eyes, the Subhumans, Valley Arena, and Zookeeper. It will be interesting to see what Little Big Town does as they have scanned over 1,000,000 copies of their last one. Wonder if they can do 150,000 copies. It will be interesting to see how the Neko Case re-issues will do as it is a lot to ask fans to buy 3 new reissues after many more than likely already own them. And what do you think the Plain White T’s re-issue will do? Sure the band is huge, but most of their fans were fueled by radio play of “Delilah” and this Fearless re-release will likely not show up on their radar. What do you all think?

I have to say I’m not too surprised by the ineffectiveness of the MTV push for Minus The Bear. I really think at the end of the day their sound is just a little too mature and forward thinking for your typical MTV viewer to latch on to. I wonder how much of a difference Aesop Rock saw as well from his MTV promotion?

Wow…Armor For Sleep’s first major label album bombed! I recently wrote a review of the album on my site and gave it 4/10. The lyrics of that album are amazingly atrocious.

Why do these bands keep going to majors, when their bigger indie counterparts have mostly failed, to return to the indies?

If you go to a major label, you have to write a commercial album. Not the same thing over and over. If you’re on a major, you have to make them money. Simple as that. Selling 9,000 your first week isn’t the way.

AFS sold more first-week on Equal Vision for the last record (they did at least 10k, and I think it was actually like 12-14k). Talk about a flop.

I don’t really think that 9000 is a flop. It would have put them in the #9 spot on the indie chart.

I would have liked to see Saves the Day do better, but 6700 is solid.

I think that the OpIvy disc go really go two ways. I think it will sell rather large copies or it won’t sell at all. If there had been more advertising I would feel more certain that it would do well.

Did anyone notice Blues Traveler at the bottom of the chart? Didn’t they used to sell like millions of records? Could someone give me some perspective on that?

Tom….My charts don’t have Far-Less on the sales list. You had to sell at least 545 albums to make the list. I’m assuming they sold less than that. Maybe Virgil has their numbers.

Chris…You have to consider they are on a major label. For the label to even break-even, Armor has to sell around 250,000 copies. To start with 9,000 - 10,000 is a big letdown.

I definitely see them looking for a new home, soon. Especially with all the promo that the label put into the album.

Man, the PUSCIFER album is god awful.

I expected more from Saves The Day although the album is pretty strong.

Armor For Sleep have always been rather bland and lacking in hooks. I was surprised to see them even attempt to make the jump up to the majors.

Saves the day last album sold 17,000 just a year and a half ago, album sales are dreadfully low, is there any way to tell how many times an album has been downloaded on itunes?

Dropkick Murphys sold 4,600 this week for a total of 72,000 copies. They are also at No.174 on the Billboard 200. With 7 weeks on the Top 200, it’s easily their best charting album to date.

    Chris G-
For a major label record, getting decent press and push, 9000 is a total disappointment. I think AgainstMe’s numbers were tragically low, too.
The OpIvy re-issue is a catalog item. I’m sure no one over at the big E was expecting some giant first week. It was out of print and hard to find, and is an album kids look for when they’re “getting into punk.”

Thursday vs TBS- Thursday was very involved with this release and are using it essentially to try to relaunch themselves in the underground. Was TBS even INVOLVED in this or was this another Victory using material they had the rights to, trying to capitalize off of their current success?
