Virgin Megastore Battle of the Bands
I don’t plan to post every battle of the bands type contests I get word about, but I thought the following competition is an interesting way to join efforts between retailer and label. In this case, a label I have never heard of (Immergent Records) are working with Virgin Mega Store to host a battle of the bands. I have seen other labels do similar things and if done correctly, it is a great way to get your label some added exposure.

We are hosting a Battle of the Bands for high school and college aged individuals in our stores and taking entries until this Friday 8/31, see the official info below and press release attached. We’ve partnered with the indie label immergent records and are really trying to arm bands with information to get them where they want to go. If you know anyone who may be interested please send it on to them and if you are so inclined to post it for readers that would be fantastic!

Just in time for back to school! The Virgin Megastores will host a Battle of the Bands contest in seven markets (New York, Orlando, Dallas, Phoenix, Denver, Los Angeles, and San Francisco). Submissions will be collected at all Virgin Megastore locations and online at www.virginmegamashup.com between August 20th and August 31st. The Battle of the Bands will allow high school and college-aged bands to submit original music for a chance to: perform live at a Virgin Megastore, win prizes including a consignment deal in a local Virgin Megastore and compete for the grand prize: travel and accommodations to attend an exclusive Industry Boot Camp with immergent Records in Los Angeles, track mixing, an evening with Virgin executives and other prizes. Battles will take place between September 10th and September 21st and participating customers and fans will get to vote for their favorite bands at battle events and online to be entered for a chance to win prizes.

I ask because I just entered the Land in the Band contest (http://www.landintheband.com) where musicians can enter to win cash, prizes and the chance to join the Commodores on tour for a week as part of their band. (I entered as a drummer, natch, but pretty much any musician can enter.)
I checked it out, and it seems legit. Anybody else do this? Has anyone won something like this? Are the prizes worth it?
