What Questions should we ask brick and mortar distributors/stores?
I am working on a series of interviews with people at brick and mortar distributors and stores and thought that many of you might be interested enough to help us put some questions together.
What would you like to know about the people behind your favorite indie record stores or at mom and pop distros like Choke, Very, Revolver, and so on?
thanks for your help.

How are Choke’s and Revolver’s finances since it’s common knowledge they’ve been on hold with so many distributors over the last year?

Do they accept albums from Latin American labels?
I know a lot a labels from down there that have great bands, great albums, but I think they have a little problem. Tour in US.
Since I live in US, I’m trying to promote bands from Argentina, Chile, etc. and I think the have a great potential.
Also, I know that the language is an important issue, but if I grow up listening punk music in English, why a guy from US couldn’t listen punk music in Spanish?

What types of things do brick and mortar stores wish that labels, bands, and distributors would do to be of some aid to their current plight? Can any of the aforementioned be of any help? And how can labels and bands cement a positive and longterm relationship?

Is it true that Epitaph is no longer selling to distributors like Sounds of California, Smash and Very?

As a (two) store “chain”, I’d like labels to realize that a) the majority of the people in the United States are still interested in buying music in a hard-copy format and b) pricing structure on CDs is the biggest barrier to sales.

hey slomp - I can’t speak for the other 2 distros you mentioned, but we’ve never had a direct account with Epitaph. We have contacted them several times over the past years, but were always told they weren’t accepting new accounts and they would just fax us a list of other distributors that we could buy their releases from.
I’m not quite sure what their reasoning was / is, but seems a little odd they wouldn’t want another indie distro out there selling their shit (and especially that we would have probably given them a $5k to $10k initial order), but it happens. Epitaph isn’t the only label out there that declined dealing direct with any new mom and pop distros like us, either. Oh well.
We usually get Epitaph stuff from their major (chain) distributor (ADA), or sometimes from one of our fellow Mom And Pop distros like Choke, Sound Of California, and Revolver… so those guys might be more equipped to answer your question.
