MP3: William Elliott Whitmore “The Chariot”

I have been fascinated with William Elliott Whitmore since first listening to “Hymns for the Hopeless”. William sounds like he could have been the frontman for the band in “O Brother Where Art Thou” and if you were just listening you would swear that there was an 80 year old black man singing those songs. William is actually a twenty something punker gifted with an incredible voice. He has toured with the Pogues, Murder By Death, Clutch, and has an upcoming tour planned with Lucero. I missed him the last time he came to Denver but some of our staff saw him and said it was unreal watching him play.

William has a new album coming out, “Song of the Blackbird” and I honestly can’t get enough. Although you can’t find mp3s on the Southern site(pretty terrible label site if you ask me), a google search found a Southern hosted mp3 from the new album. I wanted to share the song with you as I hope this new album makes him a household name. The song is called “The Chariot” and is a great representation of the entire album.

In very good news for the Suburban Home camp, Ghost Buffalo have been asked to support a week’s worth of midwest dates William is doing in support of the new album. I could not be happier and am so excited at the opportunity this presents for Ghost Buffalo. If you are anywhere near any of these dates, please go and check out what I guarantee will be a unique set of performances.

That’s some good stuff. Have you heard the Busted Hearts? They are similar to the style that you described. Chip Hanna of US Bombs/ One Man Army fame does lead vox.

aaron, that is very cool stuff. I had never heard of them and had no idea members of us bombs/one man army were playing bluegrass. I look forward to hearing their album. thanks for sharing.

it is funny to me that all of these older punkers are all playing bluegrass, folk, and country.

Just saw WEW in MPLS- He was mesmerizing. Sounds like he could be in a migrant camp in the 30’s. Likes whiskey too, another plus…
